Tired but satisfied

Posted by revolverroach at 06:10 AM on April 14, 2004.

Smokes:4 | Coffees:4 | Sleep: Zero

Finally finished fixing the template to my satisfaction. Gray, white, and shit yellow-brown. My favourite color scheme.

Apparently my recent interest in blogs has infected corroded, causing him to register in both livejournal and tabulas.

Kilawinguwak has jumped off the blogspot ship in favor of the community friendly environment of tabulas.

I can't take credit for this, however, since I started blogging under the influence of other friends (and a touch of nicaffeine).

Will blog later today. After a bit of sleep. And a heavy breafast. And a trip to Ateneo. And then San Beda. And a movie with OB...

Damn. It's gonna be a long day.

Dissatisfaction Guaranteed

Posted by revolverroach at 01:12 PM on April 14, 2004.

Katipunan Avenue has a traffic problem. One that has illicited much bitching from drivers and commuters who work, live and study in and around the Katipunan area.

This problem has been partially solved by closing off the intersections and sticking U-turns every few meters along the street, thusly eliminating the need for traffic-lights and stopping cars. Instead of being being caught in a standstill for ten to fiteen minutes while MMDA try to unclog the streets, motorists now enjoy a slow, yet continuous crawl along the busy avenue.

But people are still bitching.

Nope, it's not the motorists anymore. It's the pedestrians.

By eliminating the intersections that had been the primary cause of the traffic problem, the MMDA also eliminated the pedestrian crossings. Since the flow of vehicles never stop, any one who tries to cross the street on foot risks being caught in a hit-and-run.

The MMDA's solution: Ban people from crossing the street. Force them to use the pedestrian overpasses. Both of them.

That's right folks. In the busiest stretch of Katipunan (about a two kilometer length beginning from Gate 1 of Ateneo University to the Main Gate of Miriam College) there are only two pedestrian overpasses. They are about a kilometer apart from each other and while the overpasses themselves are covered, the path to them isn't.

The Philippines is a tropical country. And it's summer.

So now as one problem is solved another arises. Will they solve this one too? Or will the solution only call up another wave of bitching?

Trinkets [Short Fiction]

Posted by revolverroach at 02:23 PM on April 15, 2004 as a favorite post.

He unlatched the window from the outside with a piece of wire. He hoisted himself up and a moment later was inside his room.

She was sitting on his bed.

She tilted her head towards him and smiled. There was a small cardboard box on her lap.

“What are these?”

He took of his shoes and sat down on the bed beside her.

“Trinkets.”

She tipped the box, letting the contents spill out onto the bed.
She picked up a pink plastic comb and held it up in front of him.
“Marianne.”

An eye lash curler.
“Louisa.”

A retainer.
“Pam.”

An electronic alarm clock.
“Elena.”

A Vicks inhaler.
“Judith.”

She raised an eyebrow at him.
“I’m beginning to see a pattern.”

He shrugged.
“It has to be something ordinary, often used and belong to someone I like.”

“Do they know you have these?”
“Nope.”

She laughed.
“Klepto.”

She stood up.
“I have to pee.”

She walked into his bathroom and shut the door. A minute later he heard the toilet flush.

As she stepped out of the bathroom they heard the front door open. She stood up.

“I’d better go greet your parents.”
“It was nice seeing you again.”
“You too. Bye.”

She walked out of his room. A moment later he heard voices in the hallway.

"How are the twins?"
"I tucked them into bed half an hour ago."
"Thanks for keeping an eye on them."
"You're welcome. Goodnight!"

He heard the front door open and shut.

He got up off the bed and walked to his bathroom. He picked up a tube of toothpaste.

He paused for a moment, then put the toothpaste back down.

He smiled.

His toothbrush was missing.

Wandering the Web

Posted by revolverroach at 02:49 AM on April 16, 2004.

Oy vey. I've been page hopping so much I can't remember half of what I surfed. Thank god for Mozilla:Firefox Histroy logs.

Download Mozilla:Firefox at http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.8/Firefox-0.8.zip

IRC Bible

Chatting with Corroded sent me to Weirdworks which led me to IRC Bible.

I've read a few posts and I've come to the conclusion that it (the site) is a good thing to have in the world. Sure it may seem to be irreverent but think about the effort the site owners put into recreating scenes from the bible using l33t language and IRC protocols. It's an adaptation. Like "Jesus Christ Superstar" is an adaptation. So is "The Passion of the Christ"

Heck, that site got me to PICK UP and READ my Bible. That's something that Father Paul, our parish priest, and his homilies has never been able to get me to do.

Tattoo's and Piercing

Excerpts from Bit's blog and related comments.

Bit says:
I don't think it's the "rebellious" nature of body art that turns potential employers off. Being rebellious or radical isn't as big an issue with them, as many were already raised in a much more liberal era. The bigwigs, however, associate tattoos and unusual haircuts with the stereotypes of punks and street people. In their minds, you would be on the same level as they are-- no education, lazy, unproductive. What scares them is not radical methods, but nonexistent ones.
Bruce says:
Back when I was working call centers none of them asked me if I had a tattoo.

If you are, however, applying for a position where you will be visible to the public (ex. cashier at Jollibee) you will be made to "erase" your tattoo, a process that leaves your skin with a cross between a scar and an ink-blot test.

As to tattoos, piercings and society: the philippine public still believes that body art and rings is a sign of deviant behaviour. Kind of odd considering that our ancestors were really into that stuff.

Maybe the fact that genital piercings were once used as a form of punishment has to do with it.

"...in the Philippines in 1868, noting that men might use a penis insert with sharpened points to punish a woman"

Just got home from Japo's house. Stayed overnight and played Baldur's Gate 2 and SVC Chaos.

We also watched watched "Nobody Loves Me but the Acacia Tree", of which I have a LOT to rant about, but that'll have to wait 'til later.

I've got to be off again so for now I'll leave you with this little quiz I picked up from Kilawinguwak and Corroded.

How evil are you?

No Problem

Posted by revolverroach at 04:20 PM on April 20, 2004.

People keep asking my why I never talk about my probelms. They say that it's not fair to them, who often ask me for advice. My answer is simple.

I don't have problems.

At least, not in the way that they mean. Problems of life and love, family and friends. Problems that keep them awake all night, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought. Problems that make them feel anger, doubt, resentment, fear; a myriad of negative emotion. Problems that are solved through nothing short of an epiphany.

But' that's not to say that I don't face obstacles in life.

Luck has never been on my side. Bad things happen around me. More often than people know. But I don't dwell on those things. I'd rather be chatting with friends, watching a good movie, reading the morning paper or eating a nice bowl of cereal.

Maybe if you took some time off from worrying about your "problems", you might see that life is not so bad after all.

Eating and Driving

Posted by revolverroach at 01:46 PM on April 22, 2004.

Last Night's | Smokes: 31 | Coffee: 1 | Alcohol: 2

Louie's party yesterday. I had to go to Ateneo. Then pick up Van from Bulacan. Then pick up Pong and James (and his entire drum set) from Antipolo. Finally we made it to Louie's house in Makati.

The whole trip took 6 hours. Surprisingly my legs didn't hurt that much. I must be getting used to driving all day.

Party was pretty relaxed. Mostly friends chillin', eating, talking, drinking. Me and Van we're the only one's smokin' but that's okay. We smoked enough for everyone.

I did not drink much beer, seeing as I had to drive home people afterward. Instead, I spent the entire night eating. I must've eaten about 1/4th of my body weight. Louie knows how to serve his guests. :D

MHS did pretty well considering the amp mad Nell's voice sound like it was coming from a tin can. Sherwin, the new guitarist, fits in like he's been there for years. Louie and James are great as usual and Obbie went all-out on the percs. He looked like a ripe red apple afterwards. Martin should start wearing ripped clothes and big-ass cargo pants to much his grunge-style hair.

Brought everyone home in the span of three hours and when I got back home I was still able to surf for about an hour. Looks like the strength training is finally paying off.

Party at Jay Mata's house tonight then Batangas tomorrow. Lookin' forward to some RnR.

On a side note: check out twistedxfactor's page. A fellow nicaffeinoholic!

Batangas in a Nutshell

Posted by revolverroach at 08:34 PM on April 26, 2004.

Day 1:
Woke up. Typed stuff for mom. Moved around debris for dad. Dodged a bunch of police/MMDA before giving up on bringing my car. Took the MRT to Magallanes, being pleasantly crushed by three nubile young women. Met up with MHS and shoved off to Batangas. Slept thru most of the trip. Ate dinner (thrice) at Villa Vergara then went night swimming. Drank some beer while catching up on news. Dried off and told ghost stories. Slept.

Day2:
Woke up to a camera flashing on my face. Ate breakfast. An hour or so later ate lunch. Went fishing. Didn't catch anything. Went swimming. Ate siopao. Ate dinner (twice).

The Drinking:
Four Seasons Gin. Gin Pomelo. Gin Tonic (Yech). Lambanog (Foul aftertaste!). Coke. Chips. A glimpse into the life history of Nell. Chocolate. Pop cola. Coffee. Coffee. Cigarettes. Coffee (Aftertaste finally gone). The birth of Martyr Man. Coke. Rhum. Martin's first smoke. Brandy. Vodka. Martin's second smoke. Eight O'clock orange juice. Vodka. The christening of Arthur (the swimming pool). Vodka. Staring at the rising sun. Dancing like fools. Slept.

Day3:
Woke up with a cold. Missed breakfast. Ate lunch (four times, prawns were extra tasty). Chilled in the pool. Took a bath in extremely elegant hidden bathroom. Took pictures. Said goodbye to Arthur. Stole a wad of tissue paper for my runny nose. Packed bags. Left Batangas.

Ants Go Marching

Posted by revolverroach at 06:37 PM on April 27, 2004.

There are ants living in my monitor.

I'm not sure wether they're in the screen or just in the stand. They come out in groups of two or three, looking for food. It's a wonder that they even find any. The room is an office. Nothing but stacks of paper and computer periphery.

I'll tolerate them for now. As long as they don't pose a threat to my hardware i don't mind having them around, though I've got to find a way to divert their trails. Too often they stray towards my mouse pad, climb up my arm and take small bites out of my flesh. I'd be flattered by the attention if it didn't itch so much.

Beautiful People

Posted by revolverroach at 10:08 PM on April 30, 2004.

Weekends are fun for me, my house being so close to the Greenhills Shopping Center. Ever since the Ayala's took over and gave the place a face lift the upper crust have deemed the place worthy to be graced by their presence. It's like a slice of the Makati subculture moved right into my front yard. Walking around the mall feels like stepping into a fashion magazine. Beautiful people everywhere.

Sometimes I wish I had designer clothing. With the right clothes, looking good seems effortless. But alas, I'm too cheap to buy such frivolous things. I'd rather spend my cash on a band gig, a few beers and a pack of cigs.

Side note: two people asked me for a light as I was walking around the mall. You're wearing 1000+ pesos shirts, 2000+ peso pants and smoking blue seal cigarettes, yet you don't have a lighter? Strange ones, these.
